One evening, during an all girls night out, Brian and Emma worlds collide into each other. When back at home, Emma looks for Brian online and she discovers that, though, the young man is tall, Irish and handsome, he also belongs to the “wild” side of the law.

Pictures from Italy by Charles Dickens

image

Being an Italian reader, this book has been a real adventure for me. It’s funny to see your country through the eyes of an English author of the XIX century. From Genoa to Florence, from Rome to Naples, my beloved Italy has been told and described by one of the authors I love the most. Descriptions are accurate as usual, and there’re also a lot of funny sketches about daily life in Italy. Some pages have made me laugh, some other have made me angry, of course. There’s something I’d wish to say to Charles, old chap, about our country and our uses but it’s too late to do that, I suppose. What has surprised me the most was the enthusiastic view of Milan, but we should consider that Dickens has visited this town BEFORE the great industrialisation. This is why he tells us about its architectural and artistic beauty, passing through natural spots that perhaps don’t even exist anymore. The most interesting feature of these notes (because these ARE notes and nothing more) is how ironically they’ve been written, but it doesn’t surprise me very much. Dickens has always written like that, and it’s really interesting to read something of his that is not a novel and that contains the main features of a real, autobiographical logbook.

Indifference is the answer

image

Monday evening at Catullo café. Biscuits and coffee and too much thoughts to organise. I’ve spent my day thinking about how to react to bad news. For instance, imagine that your ex boyfriend is messing up with everything and everyone that concern you. Imagine that he’s doing his best to make people have an argument with you. He’s telling lies and he’s leaving bad reviews to your books on Amazon. What do you do? Nothing, of course. Indifference is worst than anger and it hurts more. So, this is my situation at the moment: someone who’s doing his best to bother me and “make me disappear” (a quote of his) and me doing nothing to put a stop to all this mess. Indifference is the answer. It’s an invisible weapon or, better, a shield that makes you stronger without a move. So, that’s my daily advice: make bad things go away from you and free yourself of the bad seeds of incoherent people who just want you to lose control. There’s something that isn’t worth standing for. Chose your battle, ‘cause your time is too precious to be wasted in stupid things.

Blank page

image

As a writer, I’ve always had to deal with the problem of the blank page. How many times have we opened a Word file just in order to spend our time watching powerless at the empty page? So much to Say, so much to give, but with The nightmare of The “beginning” standing still. If there’s something I’ve learned by experience, it’s that the kind of confusion we feel when we start writing something new is fundamental. We need that moment of despair to find out what we really want to communicate to others and why we’re doing what we’re doing.

There’s nothing to be scared of: blank Pages are a part of The creative process. Just make a coffee, listen to your favourite songs, browse The most inspiring Pinterest walls. Force yourself to Write The first, fearful word. The others will come next. Don’t be anxious, don’t be afraid. Writing is fun and it’s always catharsis, so enjoy it and don’t mind being so confused. Just make yourself through. You can definitely do that.

Teach your children

I’m a teacher, among the other things. I’m not The kind of teacher you can find at school but I simply help children and teenagers to do their homeworks, but still I love considering myself a teacher. Perhaps, I should say that I’m a Student because most of The Times children teach me how to face life. Young people are AMAZING, in capital letters. They’re full of life and enthusiasm, always ready to put themselves into a mess, and I really love The confusing realities. That’s what makes them ready to be ready, to learn how to deal with fear and courage, with mistakes and right choices. This is The reason why I really can’t stand grown-up people Who try to make them extremely “rational”. Life is something We learn by mistakes. There’s not “good” or “bad” and all colours are Never so neat and well defined as We adults think: there’s so much shades, in life. Teach your children to be what their are: children. Make a shelter for their most absurd dreams. Believe them when they Say they want to become astronauts. Leave them alone. Don’t be afraid of The moment when life’ll wake them up. That’s still Time for that. The time will come when they’ll be grown-up people but, if you leave them The childhood they deserve, they’ll guard their little selves inside. And God knows how The inner child could help facing life as rational, fearful adults.

Translating Time

image

This fall day begins with two black jackets, one upon the other, and a new reason to be happy. More than One, actually. I’m translating two Books into Italian language and this is wonderful, I gonna dance all day long. The first One is a novel from a series by Sky Corgan and I’m translating it From english to Italian. The second One is still a secret but I can say that it’s a French novel by One of The greatest French novelist of all times and I still can’t believe it. For the next weeks, I’ll be spending my Time reading and translating, reading and translating, until my eyes won’t fail me. But it’s my great opportunity to do what I really want to do and to practice English and French at my best. Concerning The books I gonna review here, The next two ones will be “Pictures From Italy” by Charles Dickens, old chap, and “The danish girl” by David Ebershoff. Have you read them? What do you think?

Happy thursday everybody!

Coffee: Home to go, thank u

image

I’ve always loved coffee, perhaps because it’s been part of my education. When I was a little child, my mother used to make me taste some of her coffee, even if with a lot of Sugar, of course. I grew up with that smell that suddenly became the smell of my home and affections, The smell of love and care. It was the smell that fulfilled my grandparents’ home when they woke up at 4 o’clock after their afternoon rest and I was waiting for them to come in The kitchen, playing with my drawings and my puzzles. And then, when I was at high school, The time of coffee meant The beginning of my homeworks, but it was in such a way comforting. My mother, my father and I, all together at The kitchen table, drinking Coffee as a family From the movies. Besides, there were The summer holidays and all that little cafés where We spent our Time together and every stranger place suddenly became just like Home. That’s what I meant when I’ve said that coffee was part of my education.

Now that I’m 24 and I spend a lot of time alone and I’m gonna leave my country, Coffee is my Home-to-Go. Wherever I am, I carry my Home and my family with me. And I have to thank my parents because That’s their most important gift.

Autumn, love of my heart

I love seasons. I love the way they follow one another just like they’re dancing with no rest. Every season has its meaning and its power and that’s the reason why I really can’t stand people saying “I can’t wait for summer/fall/winter to come”. Just live. Live what it’s meant to be lived. Live summer and dive into the sea, have fun on the beach, take a perfect tun, organize a bonfire party at night. And then, when all that arrives to an end, don’t regret it. A new season is come and it has to be lived. I believe in the circle of life and I believe in nature and That’s why I think that each season has to be appreciated just The way it is. It’s fall, guys. Let’s cook pumpkins, drink hot tea, read a new Book in bed. Let’s take life The way it is. And here it comes The pouring rain to wash summer away. And here it comes Halloween with its wonderful opportunity to be a child again. Let’s wear orange and brown dresses, Let’s change The iTunes playlist. Life is a dance with no rest, so Let’s dance ‘til The end.

The neverending story by Michael Ende

image

When I started reading this book, I was just like “Why haven’t I read this before, when I was younger?”. Later, I’ve thanked my usual way of procrastinating because I just realized that this book can reach its full potential when it’s read by adults. It’s not only a fantasy story for young readers, but a complicated and fascinating novel about human nature, desires, love and aims. The first part of the book focuses on the importance of names, because truth hides in the possibility of giving things their real name, while lies work the other way round. Instead, the second part is dedicated to the real meaning and power of desires. In the end, the last part tells us about our relationship with nature, both intended in the biological and pshycological senses.
This book is so amazing to be read and so important to be “studied” that it probably is one of the main masterpieces of our time. It has to be read twice: when you’re young, in order to amuse yourself, and when you’re a grown-up, in order to understand it.

The Book of spells by Kate Brian

image

Ok, so I’ve finished reading this Book. It’s a Prequel From The Private series by Kate Brian and I have to admit I didn’t expect too much: for some mysterious reason, prequels and spin-offs Never reach the series’ level (I should Pay attention to that since I’m a Writer too). The book is good, after all, and you can read it in Two-three days, but The problem is its incredible predictability. You can imagine everything is gonna happen since page 1 and the  entire novel is a series of clichés: The Book of spells hidden in a church, The candles, The Coven, The One Who loves, The One Who hates, The accidental death of a Coven’s member (That’s not a spoiler: it’s all clear From The beginning) etc. The romance between Eliza and Harrison is sooooo easy, sooo flat! I can’t even call it “romance”. Catherine, The “best friend”, is an unusual character. I’ve suspected her since The beginning, perhaps because something in The story has Made me do that, but in The end She’s not dangerous at all. What I wanna Say is that sometimes The writer seems to guide The reader through a path that she’ll leave later. There’s always something that seems “interrupted”. Oh, I don’t know. I didn’t like that much. However I’m gonna finish the Private series (I’m now reading The third Book). We’ll see.

Have a nice day!
